jan 29, 1886 - Benz Patent-Motorwagen

Description:

In 1879, Carl Benz was granted a patent for his first engine, designed in 1878. He later made the internal combustion engine feasible for powering vehicles. His first Motorwagen was built in 1885 in Mannheim, Germany, and he was awarded the patent in 1886. Benz began promoting the vehicle in 1886, and about 25 Benz vehicles were sold between 1888 and 1893. Emile Roger of France added the Benz car to his line of products, initially selling more in France than in Germany. Bertha Benz, the wife and business partner of Carl Benz, undertook the first road trip by car in August 1888 to prove the road-worthiness of her husband's invention.
