Encouraged by the exiled king of Pharos, Demetrius, King Philip V of Macedon formed an alliance with Hannibal against Rome, signing a treaty in the summer of 215BC. This treaty promised mutual support and defense specifically against Rome and its allies, additionally, the treaty ensured that Phillip V would have a stake in any peace talks and negotiations with Rome alongside Hannibal. This treaty remains unbeknownst to the Romans, enabling Phillip to take the initiative and leading a suprise invasion of Illyria.
