jan 29, 1850 - Compromise of 1850
Description:
The Compromise of 1850 was a compromise that admitted California as a free state, made it easier for southerners to recover fugitive slaves, settled a Texas-New Mexico boundary dispute in the former’s favor, ended the slave trade in Washington, D.C., and created Utah and New Mexico territories with the question of slavery in each to be determined by popular sovereignty. The Compromise of 1850 helped lead to the Civil War because some southerners felt that it made the north seem more aggressive in its anti-slavery views, this therefore contributed to southern resentment, which may have led to the Civil War occurring sooner.
