Description:
Johnny Depp’s Pirates of the Caribbean Inspired John Boyega’s Acting Career
By Daniel Gillespie
John Boyega says watching Johnny Depp filming a Pirates of the Caribbean movie at his college convinced him acting was his future. Boyega, of course, is famous for being one of the three leads chosen to anchor the new Star Wars sequel trilogy, starting with The Force Awakens in 2015. Boyega played Finn, a stormtrooper who goes rogue and decides to join the Resistance. Sadly, Finn's narrative arc was consistently sidelined in subsequent films, something the British actor has spoken out. He's even gone so far as to say he preferred Finn's story in Colin Trevorrow's unused Star Wars 9 script.
The Star Wars franchise is just one of many Disney currently owns, and one of its other most successful properties is the Pirates of the Caribbean series. The first film starred Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightly, and, in an Oscar-nominated performance, Johnny Depp as the iconic Jack Sparrow. Depp has anchored the franchise, appearing in all five films released so far, with his involvement in a potential sixth the subject of great speculation. Now, Boyega reveals that he and Depp have more in common than working on huge Disney franchises.
Boyega tells THR the tale of how he was convinced acting was the right career path for him. The story happened when he was attending the University of Greenwich, a popular location for filming. Boyega says he heard a loud bang one day and ran out of a film studies class to see what happened. Once there, he saw Depp shooting a Pirates of the Caribbean movie and took it as a sign from God that he should become an actor. You can read the full story below:
