Around 30 schools for the Deaf were established in America during Clerc's lifetime, most notably Gallaudet University. Because Clerc taught the majority of the students and teachers at the American School for the Deaf, his teaching style and methods were heavily influential to those who went on to found the other schools. Even after retirement, he continued to support and help Deaf schools for years.
