In 1974 Britain's colonial rule of Grenada came to an end and after violence ensued over who would take over power of Grenada. The proposed new Prime Minister was named Eric Gairy an authoritarian, corrupt military leader. Gairy had an interest in the paranormal and in 1979 he went to New York to create an “international committee to study unidentified flying objects.” (Britannica). During this, a group of revolutionaries in Grenada took over the government in a peaceful coup. Their new leader was Maurice Bishop. Bishop was a socialist and aligned himself with the Soviets. However, Bishop did travel to D.C. to work with the Americans as well. After this, a severely Marxist group of the government attempted to stage a coup, and Bishop was killed. To stop the spread of Marxism beyond Grenada and put down the newly violent government the U.S. invaded Grenada to take down this government.
