Description:

On December 8, 1953, President Dwight D. Eisenhower delivered his “Atoms for Peace” speech to the United Nations General Assembly , addressing the nuclear arms race. He emphasized that “ the dread secret and the fearful engines of atomic might are not ours alone” acknowledging that both the United States and the Soviet Union have nuclear weapons and the ability to use them. Eisenhower proposed that these nations should “make joint contributions from their stockpiles of normal uranium and fissionable materials to an international atomic energy agency”. Wanting to repurpose nuclear energy for peaceful uses. This speech led to the establishment of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in 1957, wanting the safe and peaceful use of nuclear technology. Eisenhower speeches made a pivotal moment in the Cold War, shifting the population's ideas of nuclear destruction to more peaceful options.
