This was a very important milestone in music technology. Ribbon microphones are similar to moving coil microphones in the sense that both produce sound by means of magnetic induction. Basic ribbon microphones detect sound in a bi-directional pattern because the ribbon is open on both sides. This microphone allowed many studios to broadcast their sound over the radio, and these were used on stages for live performances.
