jan 1, 1848 - Frankfurt Parliament (National Assembly)
Description:
The Frankfurt National Assembly was the first freely elected parliament in the German states. The session was held for a year (till 1849), and was part of, as well as the result of, the march revolution. It proclaimed a German Empire based on parliamentary democracy. It was very liberal, and provided basic rights. This stood against Metternich's previous system of conservativism and restoration. A constitutional monarchy was also proposed, which would have been led by a Kaiser.
