The Franco-Prussian war, also known as the Franco-German War, lasted from July 19 1870 - January 28 1871. A war between the Second French Empire and the new North German Confederation (Created in the Austro-Prussian war) which was led by Prussia, the war was mainly caused by France's goals of once again achieving European domination. It resulted in the creation of the German empire, and with a German victory. King Wilhelm I of Prussia was appointed as the German Emporer, and Germany was now unified. New german states joined the confederation. France was forced to give territories to germany, and lost a lot of power. Germany emerged as a major continental power.
