jan 1, 1494 - 1494 - The Treaty of Tordesillas is Signed
Description:
With the newfound land, Spain and Portugal had to decide who would keep the land. They decided that Portugal would keep Africa and Europe, as well as part of what is now Brazil, and Spain would keep most of the Americas. This treaty divided the world into thirds and decided which areas could be traded with and explored. This treaty also encouraged countries left out of the treaty to try to gain land in these areas.
