It's a rumor that you should look at with great caution, but since it comes from two different sources, we don't want to withhold it from you: Johnny Depp is supposed to take on a role in "Sherlock Holmes 3".

The US gossip magazine National Enquirer and the website of the British tabloid Express report in agreement that Johnny Depp is supposed to take on a role in "Sherlock Holmes 3". Both magazines do not actually belong to the sheets that are considered reliable for such casting considerations, but ...

... since both refer independently to different sources (from the environment of the studio or the actor), the rumor may be worth a look - but only with the important limitation:

It is currently no more than a rumor, because none of the Hollywood industry magazines considered reliable has so far conveyed indications of this!

Downey Jr. allegedly wants to help Depp

Allegedly, Robert Downey Jr. and his wife Susan, who was involved as producer of "Sherlock Holmes 3", want to help Johnny Depp with a commitment. The Downey couple is close friends with the "Pirates of the Caribbean" star, who is currently in a difficult position in Hollywood - among other things, because studios fear that alleged alcohol problems of the actor could delay or even cause a production to burst.

Downey Jr. feels reminded of his own problems when, after numerous scandals in the late 1990s, he barely got a job in Hollywood - if only because the mandatory default insurance for him became so high that no Hollywood studio wanted to afford these sums due to drug problems and arrests. Downey Jr. also helped friends from the industry (including Mel Gibson) to get jobs again and thus prove the regained reliability, which then led to a big comeback with "Iron Man" after a few years.

The Downey couple has enough influence as the involved producer duo to not only put a cast wish for "Sherlock Holmes 3", but also to have it implemented.

"Sherlock Holmes 3" after "Fantastic Beasts 3"?

The rumor is that "Sherlock Holmes 3" comes from the only big studio that Johnny Depp is currently holding the door open in public: Warner. There, the "Fantastic Beasts" series with Johnny Depp as the villain Gellert Grindelwald is created, who will also appear in the currently in production "Fantastic Beasts 3". The film is to be released in theaters in November 2021.

At the end of December 2021, "Sherlock Holmes 3" is to start - and it currently seems very possible that Depp will move on from the shooting of one Warner franchise film to the other Warner franchise film. The shootings will probably be coordinated with each other anyway, because Jude Law will also switch from one production to another.

Depp as Sebastian Moran?

Since it cannot be assumed that Depp would only take on a small supporting role, he would offer himself as a villain. There would also be a possible role: There have been repeated rumors that the villain in "Sherlock Holmes 3" is Colonel Sebastian Moran, known from the novel "The Empty House". The ex-army officer is first the right hand of Holmes' archenemy Professor James Moriarty, but then becomes one of the most dangerous opponents of the master detective himself.

Depp would fit the character quite well, if you orient yourself to the novel. But here, too, the limitation: Whether it really happens is in the stars. Currently, the final script of "Sherlock Holmes 3" is probably still being polished a bit, but the filming with Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law and maybe also Depp is to take place this year. By the way, it will no longer be directed by Guy Ritchie, but probably Dexter Fletcher ("Rocketman").
