jul 1, 1969 - Language wars
Description:
In 1969 the Canadian government passed a law called the official languages act. This would now make Canada have two official languages, English and french. All the federal political parties supported the idea of the official languages act when it was introduced but the provincial response was much more tepid. That same year New Brunswick passed a law that made them bilingual and Ontario had an act which would not have them as bilingual but provided French language services in certain areas of the province. Quebec's biggest worry is that they wanted to preserve their nationality and the way they did things without the English way taking over their culture. The significance of this is that it shaped the country we know today. We still recognize two languages as our official languages along with every province now being bilingual and embracing the French culture that was hated looked down upon for so many years in this country.
