sep 1, 1897 - 6.3 and 6.4 The Farming peroblem

Description:

After the Civil War, farming problems got worse because the North was more industrialized and the South was more focused on farming. During this time, technology improved quickly, and farmers started using machines to grow crops. This made it easier and faster than doing it by hand, so they grew more and more crops. But when there’s a lot of crops, prices usually go down. Also, railroads charged them more to transport their crops to cities to sell them. Most farmers at this time were in debt cycle which would eventually led to the grange movement which basically advocated loans and government aid and protection for thr farmers. Yet, the Gilded age was the era of industrialization and technology, people started to work for wages. Farmers faced many problems in this era as the political corruption, change in supply and demand, and railroads overcharging them. On the other hand, however some new technologies such as refrigerator railroads and cars railroads made it easier and faster for products in order to move from a place to another and cities. The telephone and telegraph also made the communication and business transactions easier and much faster, yet farming was still an issue in particularly in the south. African Americans and poor white farmers did the sharecropping and tenant farming, and led to a poverty for them and in debt.
