oct 1, 1934 - Moris Ginsberg

Description:

Moris Ginsberg, London School of Economics :
Sociology, 1934 :
comparative persp on social differentiation, progresses as the scale of societies extends.

considers class a 2-sided phenom :
could be considered ‘objectively’ and ‘subjectively’, lived ‘feelings’ and ‘relations of equality, superiority and inferiority’
= class as a social experience (1934: 159-161)

footnote :
A founding figure in British sociology (and the first president of the British Sociological Association in the 1950s), Ginsberg was at the time at a pivotal moment in his intellectual trajectory (Rocquin 2019: 76-80). Indeed, he was progressively detaching himself from the idealism of his mentor XXX Hobhouse. Turning to a more empirical approach, he had published a few years earlier an innovative article on ‘interchange between social classes’ (Ginsberg 1929), pioneering social mobility tables in Britain.
