N. made Ginsberg’s two-sided view on class his own. On the one hand indeed, class had
‘two pivots’, which were the ‘political and economic structure’ (1942: 130). These structures were (re)producing unequal conditions and differing access to economic and social resources.
On the second hand, these pivots were shaping a ‘consciousness’, manifested in status
symbols and social etiquette. Class indeed was also internalized and even embodied in the
form of dispositions, tastes and senses of one’s place in the social world.
