Cullen marries Yolande Du Bois who was the daughter of W E. B. Du Bois. This wedding was considering one of the most lavish weddings in black New York history.
Their wedding was "used to symbolize the union of the grand black intellectual patriarch and the new breed of younger Negroes who were responsible for much of the excitement of the Renaissance."
Their personalities were similar however the wedding turned out to be a disaster and ended fast.
Their honeymoon was held in Philadelphia and eventually Cullen left for Paris and was soon joined by his bride.
