apr 13, 1903 - Les Demoiselles D'Avignon(The Young Ladies of Avignon) by Pablo Picasso

Description:

This is a prime example of the use of African arts in Western Painting. The inspiration is seen in the women's faces, as they resemble African Masks.

This work is said to give commentary on the very women that work as prostitutes of Avignon and how they are "not the gentle and passive women, men believe they are".

Many people in the art world, seeing the simplification of figures on different perspective planes freaked a lot of people out. Even some of Picasso's art friends scolded him saying he was making a mockery of modern art. All betrayed him except for Braque and their art dealer Daniel Henry Kahnweiler.
