Operation Winter Storm (dec 12, 1942 – dec 18, 1942)
Description:
Operation Winter Storm (Operation Wintergewitter), the German attempt led by Erich von Manstein to relieve the trapped army from the south, was initially successful.
By 18 December, the German Army had pushed to within 48 km (30 mi) of the Sixth Army's positions. However, the predictable nature of the relief operation brought significant risk for all German forces in the area. The starving encircled forces at Stalingrad made no attempt to break out or link up with Manstein's advance.
