The Afghan War (29 Dez 1979 Jahr – 15 Feb 1989 Jahr)

Beschreibung:

The Afghan War (or Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan), took place because of the Soviet's intervention towards the Afghan communist government when anti-communist Muslim forces tried to seize the power. In April 1978 Afghanistan’s centrist government, headed by Pres. Mohammad Daud Khan, was overthrown by left-wing military officers led by Nur Mohammad Taraki. After that, the power was shared by two communist parties: the People’s Party and the Banner Party. They had little popular support but strong ties with the Soviets and began eliminating all political opposition. Many uprisings took place, prompting the Soviets to invade the country on the night of December 24th 1979. They sent in 30,000 troops and toppled the presidency of People’s leader Hafizullah Amin, replacing him with Babrak Karmal (he too, gained little popular support). Backed by the United States, the mujahideen rebellion was expanding rapidly to the whole of the country yet the war quickly settle down to a stalemate, with over 100,000 Soviet soldiers controlling the large cities, garrisons... The Soviets tried to eliminate the threat of insurgency by many ways (eg: bombing rural areas) but the guerrillas usually avoided their attacks. By 1982, over 4.2 million had fled to Iran and Pakistan. The mujahideen's power grew throughout the war given the fact that Pakistan, the US and other countries supplied them with arms and people travelled from around the world to join the opposition. The Soviets had lost many (some 15,000 men) and by 1988, they agreed to sign an accord to withdraw their troops. The withdrawal was complete by February 15th 1989.
