The Vietnam War (1 Jan 1953 Jahr – 1 Dez 1975 Jahr)

Beschreibung:

A war opposing the communist government of North Vietnam (as well as communist allies in South Vietnam, known as the Viet Cong) and South Vietnam accompanied by their biggest ally: the United States. The conflict originated from North Vietnam's (who had defeated the French colonial administration of Vietnam in 1954) to unify the entirety of the country under a communist regime. The Southern part, however, fought to maintain the country closer to the US. The United States participated in the war not only because they were allies, but mostly because if Vietnam became communist, there was a threat that Japan would also take on that regime, and the US had invested a lot in Japan to turn it into a vibrant, capitalist country. Active American combat units were introduced in the country on a large scale by 1961 and by 1969 over 500,000 US military personnel were stationed in Vietnam. On the other side of the war, the Soviets and China provided huge amounts of weapons and military advisers for North Vietnam. By 1973, the cost of the war proved to be too much for the US, and they withdrew their combat units, which led to a full-scale invasion on South Vietnam by North Vietnam. The casualties of the war were tremendous: 2 million civilians on both sides and some 1.1 million North Vietnamese and Viet Cong fighters. Vietnam emerged from the war a potent military power of Southeast Asia but the damages and cost of reparations were high.
