Cuban Missile Crisis (14 Okt 1962 Jahr – 28 Okt 1962 Jahr)

Beschreibung:

The Cuba missile crisis was a major confrontation between the US and the Soviet Union over soviet nuclear weapons based in Cuba. Having promised in May 1960 to defend Cuba with soviet weaponry, the Soviet Union planned on created ballistic missile launching sites in Cuba. Such missiles could hit the coasts of America within minutes is launched from Cuba. The US learned about missile transports towards Cuba in July 1962 and, on October 14th of the same year, presence of a ballistic missile on a launching site was confirmed. John F Kennedy placed Cuba in naval 'quarantine' to prevent further shipments the 22nd of October and warned that the US would seize all "offensive weapons and associated material" that Soviet vessels attempted to deliver to Cuba. Under the huge threat of a war between the two superpowers, Kennedy and Khrushchev exchanged messages and on the 28th of October, Khrushchev surrendered: work on the missile sites would be halted and that the missiles already in Cuba would be returned to the Soviet Union, and Kennedy promised to never invade Cuba (and secretly committed to withdraw armed missiles located in Turkey). The crisis was over by late November, as the two superpowers fullfilled their promises.
