The Antonine Plague, also known as the plague of Galen, was an outbreak of smallpox occurring in Asia Minor, Egypt, Greece, and Italy. The outbreak originated in Seleucia in what is modern-day Iraq, and was spread by Roman soldiers. Overall, the Atonine Plague killed 5 million people, impacting the Roman army especially hard. The disease was transmitted by face-to-face contact, as well as coughing or sneezing. The disease contributed to symptoms such as aching, fevers, rashes, and sores.
