At this time Queen Elizabeth I was the monarchy and she was interests in expanding the British Empire. Other countries such as Spain and France already had colonies in North and South America and Britain didn't wanted in. There are many reasons why an empire may want a colony. They are a great source of gold. timbers, furs, and other raw materials. Many people that don't have as much money can start a new life in the colonies. In short, colonies were very appealing leading Britain to send people over to the east coast of America to colonize it.
