In the Spring of 1863, a federal law, the Dakota Expulsion act, removes all treaties and makes it illegal for Dakota to live in Minnesota. It applies to every single Dakota person, whether they joined the war or not. This law was never revoked. The Dakota at Fort Snelling were sent on a steamboat to the Missouri rivers to new reservations, including Crow Creek, a dry place unsuitable for farming.
