The Dakota were frustrated with their life and how they were being treated on the reservations. Then, on August 17, 4 Dakota men killed 5 settlers. This helped the Dakota gain power and they convinced a Dakota named Little Crow to lead the others into war. During the morning of August 18, Dakota warriors attacked the Lower Sioux Agency and killed traders and government officials. The Dakota warriors were mostly young men, but most of the Dakota chose not to fight.
