This revolution occurred because of serious unrest and poverty in Russia at the time. The disastrous World War I had left Russia’s economy broken from the high cost and its people angry because of the high death toll. Soldiers were unequipped and angry. On March 8, 1917, over 90,000 people demanded bread in St. Petersburg and refused to leave the streets. By the 10th, many more workers of St. Petersburg had gone on strike. By the 12th, the garrison of St. Petersburg had defected the side of the revolutionaries. By the 15th, Nicholas had given up his throne to his family, but no one would take it. Thus, a new provisional government was created. The 15th was probably the most important date of this revolution, for this was when some of the goals of this revolution had been achieved. Nicholas II had given up his throne, and his terrible rein was finally over. This was the most important day of the February revolution and is when it had the most effect on the Russian revolution overall.
