Lenin was the leader of the Bolshevik party, and eventually the dictator of the Soviet Union. Early in his career, he was exiled from Russia, but in 1917, with the aid of Germany, returned to Russia at a time when the country was in turmoil and needed a leader. Lenin stepped in and promised the people "peace, land, and bread." Lenin was responsible for the coup over the provisional government. Lenin also had the Czar and his family put under house arrest, and set up the Bolshevik government. He used the Cheka, his secret police, to threaten his opposition.
