Around this time the PC was becoming more and more modern to see for people as it was becoming people's personal computer. and while that was going on the consoles were getting even greater as there was:

Genesis
SNES
Neo Geo AES

For the consoles this was the most own rivalry between two companies, and between two mascots, this was the time where people were talking about the two biggest rivalries Sonic and Mario, who both were platforming games, just both had completely different looks and settings, and it all looked so close for these two as people couldn't decide which was better and their first few releases made it clear they were rivals as both of those games were filled with care for the game which you could clearly see in the final results.

the handhelds came back into play once again with the:

Game Boy
Lynx
Game Gear
TurboExpress

and out of these handhelds it was the Game Boy which outlived them all, as it was much cheaper then the other two handhelds but didn't have expensive hardware like the game gear and turbo express had boasted on about but it had promised up to 30 hours of play on AA batteries which made it what it was made for and really well, as you could play really simple games on the game and you can play it all for a long time, while you are out and about which is what a hand held device is all about.
