On May 4th 1776 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania congress proclaimed America's independence from the British. There were a few things that influenced this decision. Britain at the time was putting lots of taxes on the colonists (the Stamp Act of 1765, Townsend Acts of 1767, the Tea Act of 1773 and, the Intolerable Acts of 1744). The Boston Tea Party, the Gaspée Affair, the First Continental Congress, the Battle of Lexington and Concord, the Battle of Bunker Hill, and the Second Continental Congress were all events that led up to America's Independence. The Americans were being overly taxed and harassed by British soldier. The Colonial congress tried reasoning with England and even sent out an olive branch twice, both being rejected and denied. The king eventually proclaimed the colonies being rebellious thus starting the Revolutionary war.
