Coventry Patmore publishes "The Angel in the House," a narrative poem, one that gains in influence through the later part of the 19th century and provides the womanly ideal of the Victorian period.
This ideal is the "Angel in the House," a woman who is an supportive wife and mother, a wise manager of her household, and a virtuous woman. She maintains a harmonious and happy home, and those around her acknowledge her are devoted to her..
This ideal appears in various other Victorian stories: Lizzie Hexam, from Dickens' "Our Mutual Friend"; Jane Eyre, from Charlotte Bronte's "Jane Eyre" (although it could be argued that Jane Eyre only fits this description in an external, superficial way); Cecilia Jupe, from Dickens' "Hard Times"; and Caroline Helstone, from Charlotte Bronte's "Shirley."
("The Angel in the House" is similar to the "Proverbs 31 Woman," who is described as the Biblical ideal of a godly woman.)
