6 Feb 1922 Jahr - Washington Naval Treaty

Beschreibung:

In late 1921 and early 1922, the world’s largest naval powers assembled in Washington, D.C. for a conference to discuss naval reductions and ways to ease growing tensions in East Asia. The Washington Naval Treaty was a group of 3 treaties. The first being the Four-Power Treaty, the second being the Five-Power Treaty and the third being the Nine-Power Treaty. These were signed by the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, France and Italy.

Causes
1. The Washington Naval Treaty was drafted and signed to relieve tensions in East Asia. These tensions had to be calmed because the world was not at all ready for another war. The countries that signed this part of the treaty, the United Kingdom the United States, Japan and France, agreed to consult with each other in case any dispute occurred.
2. A main goal of the Washington Naval treaty was to reduce and maintain naval tonnage to a set amount and ratio in the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, France and Italy. The United States and Britain were allowed 500,000 tons, Japan was allowed 300,000 tons and France and Italy were each allowed 175,000 tons. The set ratio was 5:5:3:1.75:1.75.

Effects
1. The Washington Naval Treaty led to the end of building new battleships. The few ships that were built had to be limited in size and armament. Some ships that were under construction were scraped and others were turned into aircraft carriers.
2. As part of the Washington Naval Treaty, the countries that signed it agreed to not enter any war for the next decade. The rule was called the “Ten-Year Rule”. This rule prevented any large wars from erupting. The rule was resigned every year for fifteen years until Japan did not agree to sign it in 1936.
