The United States Congress approved the Declaration of Independence. Its main author, Thomas Jefferson, wrote the Declaration as a formal explanation of why Congress voted on July 2, declaring its independence from Britain, more than a year after the outbreak of the American War of Independence, and as a declaration of the fact that the thirteen American colonies were no longer part of the British Empire. The Congress published the Declaration of Independence in various forms. It was initially published via a printed poster that was widely distributed and read to the public.
