The bloodiest battle of the Civil War, Antietam (Maryland) was a very important battle strategically. Occurring only a few days after the Second Battle of Bull Run, General Lee once again pushed his forces to invade the North. However, General George McClellan of the Union successfully repels the invasion and inflicts severe damage to the Confederates- both sides suffer many deaths and casualties. This battle is so important because it ends Lee's attempts to invade the North and turns the tide of the War in the Union's favor.
