SARS was first reported in Foshan, China and during the first year, five people died and more than 300 people were reported ill with SARS in Guangdong province, China.
SARS is a severe acute respiratory syndrome and is caused by a coronavirus. The disease is transmitted through person to person contact and through respiratory droplets and stools. SARS is found in human and animal host.
Respiratory droplets are absorbed into the body through mucous, membranes of the mouth, nose, and eyes. This could be through hugging, sharing utensils, or even speaking to someone within 3 feet.
There is a 10% fatality rate.
There has yet to be a vaccine.
There are no treatment options that scientists have found effective yet, but there are preventative measures people could take:
Washing hands frequently, where gloves, disinfect surfaces, and more.
