4 Jun 1317 Jahr - Great Pestilence, 1330s

Beschreibung:

Otherwise known as the Black Death, the great pestilence was one of the worst public health disasters of all time. It was one of the worst events Europe has ever experienced. It started as tumors in the lymph-nodes of the armpits called buboes. They treated the disease by slicing open the buboes (which were white lumps the size of eggs) thinking that this would let the plague out of the victim, curing them. The disease laid dormant in rodents and trappers collected pelts from sick animals started infecting humans.

1/3 died within 2 years in Europe and over 6 years 200 million people died. in Cairo 7000 people were dying daily in China 30% of the population died. In Florence 45-75% population died in one year

This epidemic lead to the Fuedal system of royalty declining which actually lead to higher standard of living for the general population.
There were sailors for maritime trade, the smaller labor force gave laborers more power, the doctors couldn’t save people meaning barbers had to take their place. This disfunction emphasized need for better understanding of anatomy and physiology and lead to advancements in medical findings.

This disease during this time was thought to be a punishment from god. A theory on how to combat the Plague was to think pleasant positive thoughts.

Jewish people were targeted and blamed for the causing the Plague. During Valentines day of 1349 2000 Jews were burned. This travesty was caused because many people owed jewish people money and them dying would cause the catholics to be exempt from their debts. The only option the these people had were to be baptized and converted to Christianity, but if the jews were poor they were spared.

In 1665 the plague traveled to London. At the time they believed that it was caused by foul air called "miasma". To fight against the miasma doctors wore masks with a shape of a beak that they filled with pleasant smelling things such as flowers which we now know were probably very ineffective.

This disease caused the deaths of about 1/5 of the population of London and in the next couple of years caused the deaths of half the population of Naples.

Symptoms:
High Fever, aching limbs, vomiting blood, thick urine that can be black or red, red blotches that turn black, putrid smell, swollen and discolored lymph nodes that rupture, and death within 3-4 days.
