Janssen was born in 1580 and then died in 1538. It is believed that Janssen's father played a role in the creation of the microscope. Zacharias and Hans, his father, worked in Middleburg, Holland as spectacle makers. Later Janssen reached out to an acquaintance an a Dutch diplomat and wrote to him about the microscope.
