The first slaves to be brought to America were in Jamestown, Virginia in 1619. Over time, slavery became the foundation of the economy of the colonies and the US. Tobacco and cotton were common crops farmed on plantations by slaves. The creation of the cotton gin in America in 1793 solidified the need for slaves in the economy. However, by the 19th century, westward expansion and the abolitionist movement grew. The lack of the ability to compromise when it came to slavery between the Northern and Southern states evenutally lead to the Civil War from 1861-65. The war was won by the north and slaves became offically free in the eyes of the US. However, oppression and discrimination continued as can be seen from the years of Reconstruction after the Civil War and the Civil Rights Movement in the 1900's.
