The French and Indian War, otherwise known as the Seven Years' War, was a conflict that rose into full on warfare between the French and the British over land claims starting in the Ohio Valley. Washington became a figure of the war as a successful major. The good notriety gave him a good standing with the colonies, eventually leading up to his presidency from 1789-1797. While the Indians were divided between aiding the British and the French, the French held more respect for the Indians and relied more on them for the warfare as there were less french in the Americas than British. While the French won many battles early on, the British later overwhelmed them. Victories on outposts Ticonderoga, Niagara, and Quebec in 1759 and the siege of Montreal in 1760 led to the french surrender.
