Vietnamization was the US strategy to slowly push the responsibility of the war on South Vietnam until they could safely exit the war. Richard Nixon, with the assistance of Henry Kissinger (National Security Advisor), began this process around 1969 and did so because of the US losses in Vietnam and the criticism of the war at home. During this time, Pol Pot, a dictator who led one of the most brutal political parties Khmer Rouge used the American bombings as propaganda to rally his followers. Despite the promise of working towards Vietnamization, Nixon continued attacks and began an invasion of Cambodia, which led to protests at home and the extremely unfortunate event that unfolded at Kent State on May 4th, 1970: the National Guard shot at a group of protesters and bystanders, later known as the Kent State Massacre.

American Escalation and Failure:
The political party Khmer Rouge actually grew in size as a result of us bombing Cambodia. The chaos and fear created allowed for more and more dangerous groups to form. Additionally, because the US promised to attempt to pull out of the war but continued invasions and attacks the people back home were upset and began to protest, dividing the country.
