The Cult of Domesticity is the name of the prevailing value system among middle and upper class women throughout the 19th century. It emphasized the idea that a true woman should stay in the home, provide a nice place for the husband to come home to, uphold moral values in the family, rear children, and be submissive to the husband. The idea would essentially dictate the woman's place in U.S. society for much of the 19th century. (Effect: women's rights movement became less popular) (Change: feminism became less popular)
