In 1990, Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait, a small but oil rich nation on the Iraqi border. When the U.S. demanded that Hussein pull out of the country, he refused. In response to this, the U.S. called for nations to assemble a task force to push the Iraq military out of Kuwait, which was primarily led by the U.S. military. Not long after, President Bush authorized Operation Desert Storm to commence, in which the U.S. military and the forces of other nations cojointly removed Iraqi forces from Kuwait and established a new government there. This marks one of the first instances of the U.S. functioning as a global police force. (Change: U.S. begins to function as a global police force)
