1802-1887: Dorothea Dix - Dix was a teacher who witnessed the beating of mentally ill patients and as a result was moved to campaign on their behalf. After undertaking a survey of all the mental health facilities in Massachusetts, Dix recommended an improvement plan that was accepted by the state.
