In 1976, Mao died. After this, there were still moderate communists, but there was a new group led by Mao’s wife, Jiang Qing (Madame Mao.) Moderates wanted Economic growth, while the Gang of Four wanted to start up the Cultural Revolution again. The Moderate communists won, and put the Gang of Four on trial for crimes such as treason. They were all sentenced to death. In the late 1970s, someone named Deng Xiaoping became the leader of the moderate communists. He started the economic growth. His plan was called the Four Modernizations. His goal was to improve agriculture, industry, science and technology, and national defense. A market economy started, and China did cultural and scientific exchanges with Western Countries. China began receiving technology from the west. China then had one of the world’s fastest growing economies.
