Although not a Russian ruler by birth, Catherine II became the 13th Romanov ruler in 1762 after the assassination of her husband Peter III. She followed Peter I ideas of modernization and westernization. She increased the military, created education programs and reorganized the government beneath her. Although she did good things, it was mainly to benefit the aristocracy. This caused peasant revolts, and her squashing them in a very cruel manner. She was able to gain territory by defeating the Ottoman Empire; she gained another warm-water port for Russia in the Black Sea.Добавлено на ленту времени:
