Morris was a textile designer, novelist and socialist activist. He is mostly known for his contribution to the revival of traditional British textile arts and methods of production, which were used by his company Morris & Co. With (t)his ideas, he inspired the Arts and Crafts Movement that would emerge around 1880.
-Decorative arts/design are falling in decay.
-Craftsmanship very important (guided by the hand of nature).
-Socialist: division between 'great arts' (painting, sculpture,architecture) and 'lesser arts' (decorative) are related to the class divisions of modern society and to the modern commerce. (People wanted to belong to a higher class--> commerce provided cheaper industrial produced products that were in a higher-class-style).

-A collection of his talks is bundled in: ‘Hopes and Fears for Art: Five Lectures Delivered in Birmingham, London and Nottingham, 1878-1881’ by Ellis and White. (1882)
