Because of Hitler's distrust for Stalin and his motives, he decided to break Germany's pact with the Soviet Union and invade in Summer of 1941. By mid-1942, the Nazis had reached the outskirts of the major Soviet city of Stalingrad. Nazi troops and equipment were no match for the harsh Soviet winters, though, and by February of 1943, the Nazi forces attacking the Soviet Union were reduced to nothing and forced to surrender. As a result of this battle, German forces on the Eastern front were pushed back toward Germany and the Nazi war machine was dealt an enormous blow.
