After taking power in 1799, Napoleon won a series of military victories that resulted in France having control over most of Europe, save Great Britain. Alexander I, tzar of Russia, decided to punish France for the unfair economic sanctions they had placed across Europe by imposing a heavy tax on French luxury goods. Napoleon was angered by this action and desired to increase his sphere of control by taking control of Russia in 1812, a military venture known as the Russian Campaign.
