Summary: it was an attempt to educate and register as many African-American voters as possible in Mississippi

People involved: the Council of Federated Organizations (COFO), the SNCC, CORE, NAACP and SCLC, directed by Bob Moses (SNCC field secretary and co-director of COFO)
Where: Mississippi
Cause: Blacks had been cut off from voting since the turn of the century due to barriers to voter registration and other laws
Effect: helped break down Jim Crow laws and brought media attention to the issue
