North-West Rebellion (26 март 1885 г. – 12 май 1885 г.)
Описание:
The North-West Rebellion was a five month rebellion against the Canadian government, fought mainly by Metis militants and their Aboriginal allies in what is now Saskatchewan and Alberta.
It was caused by a rising fear and insecurity among the Metis and Aboriginal peoples, as well as the white settlers of the rapidly changing West. There were a series of battles and outbreaks that left hundreds of people dead, but the rebels were eventually defeated by federal troops.
The rebellion had profound effects on Western Canada. It was essentially the pinnacle of the government's effort to control the Aboriginal communities and other settlers in the West. The Aboriginal people who thought that they were oppressed by the treaties of 1870s became subjugated and administered people. It took them many decades to recover politically and emotionally from the defeat of 1885.
